Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also carried celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the flight.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since reaching space, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.

The team of pioneers also featured accomplished professionals from various fields.

The enterprise behind the mission is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
